Pink salmon in the Skagit and Snohomish systems have been averaging a pound or two heavier than the run two years ago. Top action probably will last through this weekend, and should be decent for another week, but downhill after that.
Fresh fish are still coming, however, with checks at Olson
‘s Resort in Sekiu on Sunday showing 210 fishermen with 59 coho and 260 pinks. Checks at the Port of Everett ramp on Saturday tallied 270 pinks and 65 coho for 297 anglers.
Jim Strege at Triangle Beverage in Snohomish said hot pink marabou or plastic jigs are the most popular items, 1/4 to 3/8 ounces, along with 2-inch Buzz Bombs or any of a range of other pink or red spoons. Very few coho showing yet, Strege said.
The Stillaguamish is low and pinks seem to be stacking on the bottom end of the river because of that, according to Darrel Kron at Hook Line & Sinker in Smokey Point. Access the river on Boe Road at the bottom; then farther upriver at Satra Trucking, where you cross the road from the Satra operation to an iron-pipe gate that allows walking (no vehicles) access to the river. Above that it’s mostly a few, scattered spots along Norman Road that are steep and hard to fish, but at least a possibility.
Hot pink jigs, going down to 1/8-ounce in the low water, are the popular items, Kron said.
