Skerlong finishes 5th in Road America finale

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. — Carl Skerlong scored his fifth top-five finish of the season on Sunday in the Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda doubleheader finale at Road America.

Skerlong, of Mukilteo, Wash., came in fifth in the No. 14 King Taco machine for Pacific Coast Motorsports. It was his third consecutive top-five run

Rookie Jonathan Summerton raced to his second Atlantic victory of the year, taking the lead with two laps remaining and holding off Jonathan Bomarito by 1.084 seconds.

“It was a very hard run there at the end,” said Summerton, who drove the No. 36 Newman Wachs Racing entry. “I made a little mistake and I think Jonathan made a little mistake at the very end, and I think both of us did a very good job. We were pulling away from the rest of the field. I was quite happy to finish up there on the top spot.”

Bomarito won the weekend opener and moved into the series lead by three points over James Hinchcliffe with four races left this season.

Summerton won the second race of the doubleheader two weekends ago in Edmonton, Alberta, as well.

Former actor Frankie Muniz, Skerlong’s Pacific Coast Motorsports teammate, picked up his best result of the season to date with a 10th-place run in the No. 41 PCM/USRT machine. Muniz’s previous best result was 11th in Round 3 at Mont-Tremblant.
