The arrival of Justin Smoak was met with, well, a roster move to start off the Mariners’ business day.
To make room for him on the roster, the Mariners have optioned left-handed pitcher Luke French back to Class AAA Tacoma, a day after he was called up following the Cliff Lee trade to Texas.
French gave up one earned run in three innings of relief last night against the Yankees. He’s 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in four big-league appearances this season, including one start. At Tacoma, he’s 10-2, 2.69 in 15 starts and was named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team. His ERA leads the PCL.
No Mariners lineup yet, but manager Don Wakamatsu said yesterday that Smoak will start and play first base. He’ll wear No. 17.
