Snohomish basketball’s Bailey signs to play at Gonzaga

Snohomish senior forward Anne Bailey has signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Gonzaga, said Snohomish girls basketball coach Ken Roberts.

Bailey, who will be the Panthers’ only returning starter, was named to the all-Western Conference 4A second team last season.

The versatile 6-foot forward led the Panthers to the quarterfinals of the state tournament as a junior.

“She can play all five positions,” Snohomish coach Roberts said, prior to the state tournament in March. “She handles the ball well and is an excellent shooter.”

Bailey will join 2001 Monroe graduate Fauziya Muhammad, who signed with Gonzaga after her senior year.

New coach: Kamiak athletic director Tim Mead has announced the hiring of former Mariner player Rachel Dunham to be the Knights’ head fastpitch softball coach. Dunham played college softball at the University of Nebraska. She replaces Susie Robinson, who led the Knights to the 1999 state championship.

Incredible shrinking quarterback: Lake Stevens quarterback Mitch Canham has been big on the field, but says he’s getting smaller. Canham, who has led the Vikings to a 3-0 record, was surprised during his preseason physical.

“I thought I was 6-2, but the doctor said I was 6-1 1/2,” said Canham, a junior. “I guess I’m shrinking.”

Seahawks honor Concrete coach: Concrete football coach Ron Rood has been named the Seattle Seahawks high school coach of the week for the third week of the prep season. Concrete (3-0 overall) defeated Life Christian 52-7 last week. Rood has been the Lions head coach for 18 seasons.

At the end of the year one of the weekly winners will receive the Jim Ennis Award as the coach of the year and will be recognized at halftime of a Seahawks home game.

M-P teacher in WWU Hall: Scott Stokes, a Marysville-Pilchuck counselor and teacher has been inducted into the Western Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame. Stokes, who was a part of Western’s 1976 District I title team, is a member of the Vikings’ all-century team and a graduate of Nooksack Valley High School. Stokes, 45, coached the Tomahawks football team for 10 years and has been at the school for 22.
