Snohomish boys edge rival

LAKE STEVENS — Kyle Van Santen won the race with a time of 15 minutes, 55 seconds, but the Vikings lost the meet 36-44 to Snohomish in boys cross country action Thursday at Lake Stevens High School. Kamiak was third with 48 points.

“We wanted (Van Santen) to win (on) his home course, and he did,” Lake Stevens co-head coach Cliff Chaffee said.

Snohomish, ranked No. 6 in the 4A state coaches cross country poll, won the meet by placing seven runners in the top 13. Chris Goodman was the highest Panther finisher, placing fourth with a time of 16:33.

Kamiak was paced by Jonathan Cooper, who finished second, and Colton Kusilek, who took third.

Lake Stevens, ranked No. 7, was without the services of top runner Joey Bywater, who was nursing an injury. Chaffee said several top runners for each school did not compete.

“Nobody raced real hard today,” Chaffee said. “Some of the top kids took it easy — we didn’t necessarily want to set a course record today.”
