Snohomish boys soccer team wins national title

The Snohomish United Boys ‘96 Black soccer team won the U.S. Club National BU-16 Championship in Aurora, Colo. last weekend, outlasting New Jersey’s FC Copa Juniors in the title game to win 2-1.

The goals came from Kyle Witzel and Blake Crutchfield, who scored the game-winner in the final 30 seconds of overtime at the U.S. Club National Tournament.

120 boys and girls teams from across the United States attended the event, where Snohomish United finished with a 3-1 record and outscored its opponents 6-2.

The team, coached by Pat Henderson and Brent Aune, began their path to the national finals in June at the U.S. Club Northwest Regionals in Redmond. Snohomish gained an automatic berth to the Nationals after competing against teams from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana.

The team features players primarily from Snohomish County: Griffin Small (Edmonds-Woodway High School), Kristian Barney (Snohomish), Jack McCunn (Snohomish), Blake Crutchfield (Snohomish), Rio Alcorta (Inglemoor), Kyle Witzel (Sedro-Woolley), Uriel Herrera (Snohomish), Tanner Corrie (Monroe), Chewy Stoll (Jackson), Ryan Fransen (Kings), Seigo Hall (Arlington), Alex Bergstrom (Glacier Peak), Gus Baxter (Snohomish), Cole Wiley (Woodinville), Eric Jones (Snohomish), Tyler Mikulsy (Glacier Peak), Conner Seed (Glacier Peak), Derek Kuhn (Inglemoor).

Softball team to Arizona

The Juniors Softball Team from Mill Creek Little League won their district and state tournaments and are headed to Tucson, Ariz. for the Little League Western Regional Championship.

There are ten teams from California (South and North), Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska, Montana, Oregon, Utah and Washington that will compete in the tournament. Mill Creek’s first game is at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday against Utah (Cedar LL).

Winning in Arizona could clinch a spot at the Little League World Series in Kirkland for the team of 13- and 14-year-old girls, who all live in the Mill Creek area. The Kirkland tournament runs Aug. 11-17.

Team members are Kristina Day, Anna Golebiewski, Alyssa Avalos, Sophia Stoddard, Kiara Tucker, Emily Pennylegion, Marley Fischtziur, Shannon Feagles, Grace Botham, Haley Cottingham, Madison Podnar, Taylor Hudson and Hannah Ouijdani. The team manager is Page Dearborn and is coached by Ken Day, Kristen Ryan and Kaitlyn Pittman.

9-10 All Stars win state championship

The South Snohomish 9-10 Softball All Stars beat Gig Harbor 6-2 to win the state championship in La Center, their first title after reaching the championship game three consecutive years. They lost to Gig Harbor in last year’s finals, but dominated the district and state tournaments this year by a combined score of 93-3 in eight games.
