Snohomish claims Wesco North crown

STANWOOD — A little revenge against a big rival can be nice.

It can be even better when you do it on the rival’s home court.

The Snohomish boys tennis team did just that Monday, knocking off defending Wesco North champion Stanwood 5-2 on the road, and clinching the 2007 championship after finishing second in the division a year ago.

“The kids are feeling pretty good right now,” Snohomish coach Dick Jansen said. “The kids are on a high.”

Stanwood juggled its lineup for this meet by moving its Nos. 2-4 singles players to doubles. The Spartans did win two of the three doubles matches, but the contest was already decided before the doubles matches got started.

“Our kids rose to the occasion and won all the singles matches,” Jansen said. “We wrapped up the meet before doubles started.”

Chad Merkley won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Brandon Kent won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to start the Panthers off. Both boast records of 13-1 this season.

Snohomish clinched the match when Zach Stockwell won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Reed Pecha won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Jansen added that the team will now turn its focus toward finishing strong in its final two matches and the postseason.

“It’s nice we have this wrapped up,” he said.
