Snohomish comes up short against Garfield

SEATTLE – Sometimes numbers, not words, paint the best picture.

Saturday night’s portrait of the Snohomish High School boys basketball team wasn’t pretty: 22 turnovers, 10 field goals made, two assists and just 36 points, 13 less than their opponent.

Less than 24 hours after notching a victory against Monroe in their Western Conference North league-opener, the Panthers stumbled to a 49-36 loss to the Garfield Bulldogs in a non-conference contest, one of eight games (six boys and two girls) held during the second annual Les Schwab Washington Hoop Challenge at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

Snohomish head coach Len Bone summarized the next step for the Panthers (1-2 overall). “Oh yeah, there’s a lot we can learn from this game. We need to take care of the ball, that’s the real obvious one.”

Garfield’s lightning quick defense took advantage of sloppy Snohomish ballhandling throughout the game. “Our decisions were slow and bad tonight,” Bone said. “I blame myself along with our guys because…we weren’t real prepared.”

“I think (Garfield’s) quickness definitely is an asset to their defense…We committed some turnovers, but (Garfield) forced them, too.”

The Bulldogs, who scored 22 points off of turnovers, persistently harassed Snohomish’s guards, preventing Panthers star post Jon Brockman from getting many good scoring looks. Brockman, who came in averaging 30.5 points per game, finished with a team-high 11 points and five rebounds on 4-for-10 shooting from the field.

Lamar Harrison led Garfield with 14 points and was one of five Bulldogs with at least two steals.

Despite their troubles, the Panthers pulled within five points at 38-33 when guard Darrel Martin sank a 3-point field goal with three minutes, six seconds remaining. However, Brockman sat out the final seven minutes after twice tweaking an already sore left ankle in the third quarter. Without their aggressive leader, the Panthers’ rally fizzled.

Bone said he sat Brockman, who wanted to play through the pain, because “we have two games next week and I just didn’t want it to get any worse.”
