Snohomish continues marathon with 67-30 win

SNOHOMISH – Nearing the end of a brutal stretch, the Snohomish High School girls basketball team could use a break.

Playing their seventh contest during a nine-games-in-16-days endurance test, the Panthers made a season-high 12 3-pointers, including six during a 23-2 first-quarter, to dispatch Arlington 67-30 Monday night in a Western Conference North Division game.

Instead of getting a much-needed break, Snohomish takes on the pressure of finals week and a trip to play at third-place Oak Harbor (6-3 in league, 9-4 overall) on Wednesday night.

The Panthers (8-1, 11-2) are “having to gut it up here,” said Snohomish coach Ken Roberts, referring to the team’s performance during its cruel recent schedule.

The stint has included a road victory at Meadowdale (12-1 overall), the state’s top-ranked Class 3A team according to today’s Associated Press poll, and a loss at Prairie (13-1), ranked No. 4 in Class 4A.

“We’ve obviously played decent … It’s been difficult,” Roberts said. “The girls did a good job of focusing on this game.”

Guard Tara Angell scored 12 points, all on 3-pointers, including three in the first eight minutes against Arlington’s zone defense. Ashley Best added a game-high 13 points, with nine coming on 3s, for seventh-ranked Snohomish.

“Our kids moved the ball inside-out and got good looks,” Roberts said. “When our kids are open and get good looks, they’re going to make them.”

Randi Richardson scored 10 points to lead Arlington (4-5, 6-6).

According to Roberts, Snohomish’s previous season high was 11 3-pointers made in a game against Mount Vernon.
