Snohomish cross country does well at Midwest meet

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Snohomish High School boys and girls cross country teams traveled all the way to Minnesota to take part in the 21st Annual Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. And wouldn’t you know it, both teams finished impressively.

Kara Sporrong led the girls to a 6th-place team finish after running the 3.1 miles course in 20 minutes, 5 seconds, good enough for 22nd overall out of 390 competitors. The Panthers were sixth out of 43 teams.

On the boys side, Chris Goodman led the team to an overall finish of 19th out of 45 teams and 429 runners with his time of 17:08 which was good enough for 36th.

Both the girls and boys teams competed in the “gold” division of the race.

Hassan Mead of Minneapolis South High School (Minn.) won the boys race with a time of 15:49. Willmar High (Minn.) captured the overall team victory. For the girls, Allison Eckert finished 1st overall (18:17) to lead Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School (S.D.) to the overall team victory.

Bob Firman Invitational: At Eagle, Idaho, with a limited number of runners, both the Lakewood boys and girls teams ran to 3rd place finishes at the Bob Firman Invitational. Corrine Gogert led the girls with a 6th-place overall finish and Nick Devier finished 5th overall. The girls race winner was Jacyln Puga of Nampa Christian (Idaho), but it was Firth High coming away with the meet win. On the boys side, Jake Timothy’s won the race and led Bear Lake (Idaho) to the meet victory.

Vashon Island Invitational: At Vashon Island, Sara Levy finished 7th for Shorewood and Lauuren Moran finished 3rd to lead Archbishop Murphy girls at the Vashon Island Invitational Saturday. Levy led the Scots to a second-place team finish, while Moran led the Wildcats to a 4th place finished. For the boys, Nick Anderson’s 23rd place finish was best for Archbishp Murphy leading them to the eighth-place overall finish. Shorewood boys did not qualify for the team title, but Alex Krowka did finish 16th individually. Ruby Roberts of North Kitsap won the girls race with a time of 20 minutes 55 seconds and Cody Bradwell, Roberts’ Viking teamate, won the boys side with a time of 17:12. North Kitsap took home both team wins.

Oak Harbor Invitational: At Oak Harbor, Kyle King ran the 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 14 seconds to lead Oak Harbor to the boys team title. Teammate Josh Dix finished 4th (16:35) to help the Wildcats to victory. Lakewood’s boys team competed with half of it’s team in Oak Harbor and half in Boise, Idaho, at another meet.

Ballard’s Bridget Berg won the girls meet in a time of 19:53, but Port Angeles earned the team win. Megan Hall led Oak Harbor with a time of 20:54 to a second-place fnish and Cascade’s Breanna Huschka finished third overall with a time of 20:39 to help Cascade to a fifth-place team finish.

Lynnwood (3A) captured third place over King’s (1A) with a two-set victory. Kristen McKinlay had 28 kills and 10 blocks to lead 2A Cedarcrest to a fifth-place finish.

Orcas Island 35, Darrington 12: At Orcas Island, Joe Summerall ran the ball 15 times for 67 yards and four touchdowns to lead Orcas Island to the Northwest 1A/2B victory. Andy Nigretto added 111 yards on nine carries for the Vikings. Mike Parris scored both of the Loggers’ touchdowns, one on an 80-yard kickoff return and another on a 25-yard pass from Justin Odel.

Cascade Christian 48, Cedar Park Christian 22: At Sumner, Sean Girgus scored three rushing touchdowns on runs of 4, 5 and 32 yards for the Eagles. Girgus also had 58- and 21-yard kickoff returns for Cedar Park Christian. Cascade Christian is the state’s No. 7-ranked team in Class 1A.
