Snohomish girls lacrosse reaches state semifinals

The Snohomish girls lacrosse team beat Everett and Lakeside last week to advance to the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association state semifinals for the fourth time in five years.

No. 3 seed Snohomish opened the state tournament with a 13-3 win over 14th-seeded Everett on May 7. Snohomish then punched its ticket to the semifinals with a 12-5 quarterfinal win over No. 6 seed Lakeside last Wednesday.

Snohomish (12-2) faces No. 2 seed Mercer Island (13-1) in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila. The winner advances to Friday night’s title game against either top-seeded Bainbridge Island or fifth-seeded Bellevue.

“Every day, we’ve gotten better than the day before,” Snohomish coach Ruth Bonner said. “The team has really come together to put everything together and play as a team. … That’s been a big part of us getting to the semifinals.”

Snohomish and Mercer Island are squaring off for the second time in 15 days. Two weeks ago, Mercer Island beat Snohomish 13-5. Tuesday’s semifinal clash marks the fourth consecutive year the two teams have met in the state playoffs.

The Snohomish lacrosse team includes players from Glacier Peak, Snohomish, Lake Stevens, Marysville Getchell and Archbishop Murphy high schools.

Snohomish’s attack is led by Glacier Peak seniors Arianna Crusha (34 goals and six assists) and Aenne Thom (29 goals). Eight different players have scored at least 10 goals this season.

Goalkeeper Holly Smith, a Lake Stevens senior, has saved 17 of 25 shots in Snohomish’s two playoff victories.
