Snohomish girls stride past Tommies, Warriors and Scots

LYNNWOOD — When these old rivals get together they don’t allow themselves to become distracted by the presence of others.

Snohomish and Marysville-Pilchuck runners swept the top-15 places and the Panthers edged the Tomahawks for the team title in a four-team Western Conference meet held under sunny skies at Lynndale Park Wednesday.

The Panthers’ Ellie Bonner overtook M-P’s Haley Nemra to claim first place and lead a pack of five Snohomish runners in the top-nine. Snohomish scored 24 points for the team title. M-P placed second with 33, followed by host Edmonds-Woodway (90) and Shorecrest (99).

“They just ran away with it,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Regina Joyce said of the domination by Snohomish and Marysville-Pilchuck.

Joyce said despite what she described as perfect weather the 3.1 mile course was a little slow due to heavy rain the previous night. Bonner came from behind to pass Nemra and win by six seconds in a time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds.

“Ellie managed to catch her in the last half-mile,” Joyce said of Bonner’s victory. “Snohomish was very impressive, but I don’t think they were running that hard because they have a big invitational in California on Saturday.”
