MARYSVILLE — Technically there were four teams, although it felt more like there was just two.
In a battle of two co-operative teams, the Snohomish schools (Glacier Peak and Snohomish) against the Marysville schools (Pilchuck and Getchell) the former came out on top 3-1 Thursday afternoon at Marysville Pilchuck High School.
Glacier Peak defeated the Tomahawks (102-84) and the Chargers (136-33), Snohomish defeated Getchell (124-42) and Marysville Pilchuck defeated Snohomish (99-88).
Marysville Pilchuck/Getchell coach Jaci LeGore-Hodgins said that Rob Serviss, the Glacier Peak/Snohomish coach, has been a “counselor” for her after he dealt with the addition of another school a couple years before in Snohomish.
“When I’m not sure, I ask, ‘What would Rob do?’” LeGore-Hodgins said.
The Tomahawks’ Hannah Taylor (200 freestyle) and Melody Coleman (200 individual medley) each had state-qualifying times in individual events and were on the 200 freestyle relay team — along with Rebekah Pusateri and Madison Mossnagle — that swam a state qualifying time of 1:46.24.
Ella Brooks also had a state-qualifying time for Snohomish in the 200 IM (2:13.64), finishing in second behind Coleman. The Marysville Getchell 400 freestyle relay team of Lia Mullen-Gaffney, Emma Beauchamp, Rachel Hartmeyer and Jordan Kercheval notched a school record with a time of 4:21.8
The four small teams looked like two big teams around the pool. Glacier Peak and Snohomish players put their arms around their shoulders and jumped and cheered — and did the wave — while the Getchell and Pilchuck seniors were honored in a ceremony together with red and green balloons.
“It’s fun to still be able to coach the Tomahawks,” said LeGore-Hodgins, who has coached the MP program for 21 years, even though she now teaches at Getchell. “It’s fun being a Tomahawk-Charger. It’s a good combo.”
