Snohomish grad helps Westmont win national soccer title

Emalia Cornwell was the starting goalkeeper for the Westmont College women’s soccer team that won its third straight NAIA championship last week.

In Tuesday’s title game, the Warriors defeated Lindsey Wilson of Kentucky 2-1 in seven overtimes. It was the longest game in NAIA women’s soccer history.

Cornwell, a sophomore from Snohomish, played all 157 minutes and 25 seconds. She made seven saves.

Cornwell’s efforts this fall helped the Warriors (22-1-1) set or tie team records for wins in a season, most consecutive wins (15), shutouts (16), fewest goals allowed (12) and goals-against average (0.48).

Cornwell played in 16 of Westmont’s 24 games, including 13 starts. She finished the season with 0.34 goals-against average and was credited with 8.5 shutouts

Westmont College is located in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Volleyball

CC volleyball players honored: Priscilla Bernaola of Everett and Danielle Leong of Edmonds have been named to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Northern Division Volleyball All-Star Team.

Bernaola, a sophomore, led the NWAACC in dig average (6.84). She finished her two-year career at Everett as the school’s all-time digs leader with 1,215.

Leong, a freshman, averaged 8.33 assists to rank among the NWAACC leaders this season.

Named to the Northern Division second team were Edmonds sophomores Jenna Huston and Danielle Selvidge.

Seven Snohomish County players were picked for the 2003 Northern Region Sophomore Team. In addition to Selvidge, Bernaola and Huston, the group included Nicole Mauge and Michelle White of Everett, and Kayla Drewry and Kristie Peterson of Edmonds.

Football

Timberwolves claim title: The Silver Lake Timberwolves Pee Wee White football team (ages 10-11) won the Northwest Junior Football League title Nov. 1 with 32-24 victory over the Ballard Knights.

The Timberwolves finished the season with an 8-0 record and outscored their opponents 225-55.

The team included Andy Gay, Mike Wishko, Marshall Massengale, Travis Blades, William Brown, Tanner Wang, Anthony Mortera, Geoff Watson, Geno Watson, Leko Galusha, Riley Richardson, Jacob Oster, Louis Shin, Alexander Dively and Conner Grennes.

The team was coached by Kevin Blades, Cory Farrow and Jeff Graham.

Soccer

Triumphant Spirit: The Silver Lake Spirit U-12 girls soccer team defeated the Shooting Stars of Everett 2-0 on Nov. 21. Chelsea Bergley and Jessica Willmorth scored for the Spirit. Carly Grant assisted on Bergley’s goal. Willmorth scored on a penalty kick.
