MARYSVILLE – The Snohomish girls swim team stepped up the pressure after an early mistake to take home its 10th straight district title.
The Panthers captured only one individual victory en route the District 1 4A girls swimming and diving championship Saturday afternoon at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
Snohomish racked up 440.5 points with Jackson a distant second with 388.
Snohomish’s relay team seemed to get the Panthers off to a great start in winning 200-yard medley relay, the meet’s first event. Unfortunately, the Panthers were disqualified for leaving early and finished sixth.
“That was a big blow,” Snohomish coach John Pringle said. “We seemed to be off to a great start in winning the relay, but we made a mistake and those things happen.”
The Panthers, instead of dwelling on what happened in the first event, went out and swam to the best of their ability. Snohomish moved into first place by the end of the sixth event and never looked back on its way to the district title.
“This has been a tough one. We dug ourselves a hole,” Pringle said. “The girls really pulled themselves together and you can’t ask for anymore than that.”
Freshman sensation Emily Ferreira led the Panthers’ charge in winning the 100 breaststroke and finishing second in the 200 individual medley. Ferreira, after winning the breaststroke, swam the opening leg for the Panthers’ second-place 400 freestyle relay.
The Panthers’ depth proved to be the difference once again as Snohomish had at least one swimmer finish in the top six in every event.
“I told them at the beginning (of the year) it had to be a team effort,” Pringle said. “Without a doubt our depth made the difference. Every point counts and everyone matters.”
Jackson captured five first-place finishes. Freshman Alana Pazevic and standout junior Stephanie Ha each won two individual events and combined to lead Jackson’s 200 medley relay team to a victory. Ha won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly and Pazevic was victorious in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.
“We were just looking for great individual times,” Jackson assistant coach Alex Hardy said. “It’s really great and the girls worked hard to get there (state meet).”
Shorewood’s depth carried it to third place behind five third-place finishes. Lauren Williams and Tara McIntyre both had two and diver Elle MacGeorge had the other. Williams swim in the 500 broke a Thunderbird school record by four seconds.
“I was hoping for a top five,” Shorewood coach Susie McDowell said. “Finishing third is great, we had some swimmers swim well.”
Lake Stevens’ human torpedo, Kelly Conrad, captured a first and a second and anchored Lake Stevens to two first-place relay finishes. Conrad’s 50 freestyle time of 24.59 seconds was one second off her second-place finish in the state final last season. Conrad swam past Jackson’s anchor to bring home the victory for Vikings’ 400 freestyle relay team. Lake Stevens will be sending eight swimmer to the state meet.
“They had exceptional swims,” said Vikings coach Sarah Summers, who was named district coach of the year. “They had a great meat and Kelly had a great swim.”
Kamiak’s Lara Sreibers won the 200 and 500 freestyles. Taryn Van Gerpen and Claire Jordan helped lead the way for the Knights.
Marysville-Pilchuck had a 1-2 finish in the 1-meter diving competition. Junior Trang Vu amassed 374.30 points for All-American consideration. Freshman Sarah Clark had 352.25 points to finish second to her Tomahawk teammate.
“She is a excellent leader and leads by example,” M-P diving coach Dick Caldwell said of Vu. “For only a year and half of diving she has come a long ways.”
