Snohomish remains perfect

STANWOOD – It was senior night at Stanwood, but it was a trio of Snohomish seniors who spoiled the party as the Panthers nipped the Spartans in a five-game match, 23-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13, to win the Wesco North volleyball title.

With the victory, Snohomish finishes 8-0 in the division and 14-0 overall while Stanwood fell to 6-2 and 12-2 overall.

Whitney Nichols had 20 assists, Mac Stout had 12 kills and Stephanie Heard had 13 kills to lead the Panthers attack.

Snohomish’s unbeaten season was in jeopardy as it trailed 2-1 before rallying to take the final two games.

“It was a very good volleyball game,” Stanwood coach Erik Titus said. “Everyone was saying afterwards that it was the best match they’d seen all year. The kids aren’t taking it as a loss, because they know how hard they played.”

Three talented juniors, Whitney Appleby (48 assists), Megan Amundson (20 kills) and Alisha Aufai (13 kills), led Stanwood.

Mount Vernon 3, Cascade 2: At Mount Vernon, Amber Johnson had 15 kills and four blocks and Molly Taylor finished with five kills to help Mount Vernon rally in the Wesco North contest to a 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-12 victory over Cascade (1-7 in division, 2-11 overall). Kylee Anderson had nine digs and Alicia Guildner served five aces and recorded 18 assists for the Bulldogs (3-5, 5-8).

Marysville Pilchuck 3, Oak Harbor 0: At Marysville, the Tommies (5-3 in division, 6-8 overall) clinched a district playoff berth with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 Wesco North victory over the Wildcats. Nancy Coules (14 kills), Laura Begerness (seven kills, four stuff blocks), and Ashley Kehler (25 assists) led the M-P attack. Krystal Roussell (nine kills), Miranda Thiel (six kills), and Jennifer Muzzall (five kills, three blocks) were the Oak Harbor (4-4, 8-6) standouts.

Monroe 3, Arlington 1: At Arlington, Kelsey Brennan had 10 aces and seven kills, Terah Petrick had 17 assists and Jordan Birch had five kills to lead Monroe (6-2 division, 10-4 overall) to the 25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 25-16 Wesco North win. Keesha Carpenter had 25 assists, Shayna Prause had 11 kills and seven digs and Kari O’Sullivan had 15 kills and three blocks for Arlington (1-7, 5-10).

Edmonds-Woodway 3, Mountlake Terrace 2: At Mountlake Terrace, Kelly House had 32 assists and two kills and Lindsey Bordeaux recorded 13 kills to lead Edmonds-Woodway (7-2 in division, 10-4 overall) to the Wesco South win against Mountlake Terrace, 25-14, 25-14, 22-25, 23-25, 15-9. Mari Hegyi finished with nine kills and six blocks for the Warriors. Cassie Hansen-Guenthner (four aces, 13 kills) and Erin Thorlakson (two aces, 10 kills) led the Hawks (2-7, 2-12).

Jackson 3, Shorewood 0: At Everett, Jessi Rambach had 11 assists to lead Jackson (7-2 in division, 11-3 overall) to a 25-9, 25-11, 25-23 Wesco South victory. Jackson will the the third seed from the South into the District 1 tournament. Stephanie West had seven kills for Shorewood (1-8, 1-14).

Lynnwood 3, Mariner 1: At Everett, Kaytlyn Dill had 18 kills and Heather McCartney had 31 assists to lead Lynnwood (4-5 in division, 6-8 overall) to the 15-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-21 Wesco South victory. Janet Schumann had 10 kills for Mariner (2-7, 2-12).

Kamiak 3, Meadowdale 0: At Lynnwood, the Knights finished Wesco South play unbeaten (9-0 in division, 13-1 overall), sweeping the Mavericks 25-22, 25-16, 27-25. Elisabeth Smith (30 assists, five blocks) and Nicole Bozek (eight blocks, six kills) sparked the Kamiak attack. Katie Cowan’s 27 assists and Caitlyn Rohrbach’s 14 digs led the Meadowdale (2-7, 3-11) offense.

Shorecrest 3, Everett 0: At Shoreline, Anna Herold recorded 20 assists and five aces and Mary Tseng had seven kills and 18 digs as Shorecrest (6-3 in division, 9-5 overall) won the Wesco South match 25-16, 25-14, 25-17 over Everett (5-4, 9-5). Stephanie Webber had eight digs and seven assists and Maureen Frauenholtz added three aces and eight assists for the Seagulls.

Granite Falls 3, Sultan 1: At Granite Falls, Julie Saltmarsh had six kills and 10 digs to lead Granite Falls (3-9 league, 4-11 overall) to the 25-18, 26-24, 23-25, 25-17 Cascade Conference victory. For Sultan (2-10, 4-12), Krystal Paszkiecz had five aces and three blocks and Kelsey Shacklett had six kill. Granite Falls capture the league’s third seed and Sultan the fourth to the District 1 playoffs on Wednesday.

South Whidbey 3, Archbishop Murphy 1: At Langley, Silver Keck had nine kills, Jessi Eaton had 31 assists and Caitie Newman had 13 kills to lead the Falcons to the 25-17, 25-22, 24-26, 25-17 Cascade Conference victory. South Whidbey will play at Lynnwood in a crossover match on Monday for a berth in the District 1 playoffs.

Coupeville 3, Concrete 1: At Coupeville, Leah Mouw was 31-for-32 serving to lead Coupeville (6-3 in league, 6-7 overall) to the 26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 25-3 Northwest 1A/B League victory over Concrete (0-8, 0-10).

Class B District 1 tournament: At Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon Christian defeated Orcas Island 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) to advance to the finals. The Hurricanes face Shoreline Christian, which defeated Lopez Island 3-2 (25-23, 26-28, 25-22, 19-25, 15-8) in the other semifinal held at Lopez Island, at noon Saturday at Coupeville High School. Both teams advanced to the Tri-District playoffs.

In earlier tournament action, Orcas Island defeated Skykomish 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-15) at Mount Vernon and Shoreline Christian defeated North Sound Christian 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-14) at Lopez Island. Skykomish faces Lopez and North Sound Christian faces Orcas Island in loser-out matches at 10 a.m. Saturday at Coupeville High School, with the winners playing for the third Tri-District berth.
