Snohomish secures second place in North

OAK HARBOR — When Snohomish and Oak Harbor met Thursday, a second-place finish in the Wesco North division was on the line.

At the end of 12 events, the Panthers had won nine and clinched the number two spot with a 118-68 win over Oak Harbor (4-2 in league, 8-4 overall) at Vanderzicht Pool. The Wildcats finished their season in third place.

Snohomish (5-1, 6-2) was led by Eric Pedack, who won the 100-meter backstroke with a state-qualifying time of 1:01.42.

“(Pedack) was racing John Hu from Oak Harbor, who is an outstanding swimmer,” said Snohomish coach Rob Serviss, who noted Pedack’s 1.8 second lead on Hu. “That was definitely a keystone swim (at the end of the meet).”

Oak Harbor’s Hu did, however, win the 200 individual medley with a state time of 2:13.56.

Marysville-Pilchuck 143, Cascade 43: At Marysville, Spencer Girard won both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races to lead the division champion Tomahawks to the the Wesco North victory.

Stanwood 102, Everett 78: At Everett, Matt Roe won the 200-yard individual medley with a state meet qualifying time and added a victory in the 500 freestyle to help Stanwood earn its first Wesco North victory.

Shorecrest 108.5, Edmonds-Woodway 71.5: At Shoreline, Tyler Hayden swam away with two individual events and swam on two winning relay teams to lead Shorecrest to a Wesco South victory. Hayden also swam a state qualifing time in the 50-yard freestyle. He became the Scots’ all-time record holder, breaking the Scots’ 500 freestyle school record in a 3A state qualifing time of four minutes, 45.52 seconds. Hayden holds six of the Highlanders’ 11 school records. He has five individual records and is a member of a record-setting relay team.

Jackson 92, Meadowdale 78: At Lynnwood, Michael Keene won the 100-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke and Sam Atkinson won the 200 freestyle for Meadowdale, but Jackson’s team depth proved too much in the Wesco South meet.
