Snohomish stops Mt. Vernon, 4-1

SNOHOMISH – Snohomish, entering its first match of the season without two of its regular starters, still managed to out-shoot a scrappy Mt. Vernon team Tuesday and win the Wesco North boys soccer game, 4-1.

“It was a classic first game,” said Snohomish coach Dan Pingrey. “The play was a little rough and a little sloppy and we’ve got a new midfield, too.”

Regulars Brandon Crutchfield and Benji Nutu are currently playing with their soccer club at the Dallas Cup and missed the Panthers’ opener. The pair will also miss the next game against Marysville-Pilchuck Friday.

Mt. Vernon’s Rudy Martinez started off the scoring, driving in an assist from Ben Coffey seven minutes into the game.

“I was impressed with Mt. Vernon,” said Pingrey. “They were well organized and it will be interesting to see where they go this season.”

The Bulldogs held off Snohomish for only a few minutes. Then Snohomish sophomore forward Brandon Kelley put one in for the Panthers with an assist from Jordan Dettmer.

Snohomish continued its scoring spree, adding three more unanswered goals: senior forward Taylor Cochran at 38 minutes, Dettmer at 60 minutes and junior midfielder Ryan Horner at 78 minutes.

“For the last three years we had the same midfield,” Pingrey said, explaining that the game showed how the Panthers are still feeling each other out. “But I guess it’s good to be disappointed with a 4-1 victory.”
