Snohomish swimmers exceed coach’s expectation

SNOHOMISH – Knowing how many talented seniors Kamiak lost to graduation last year, Snohomish boys swimming coach Rob Serviss figured his team had the advantage going into Tuesday’s non-league meet at Hal Moe pool.

But the Panthers cruised beyond Serviss’ greatest expectations, winning 134-52.

“I didn’t expect to do this well,” Serviss said “It was a meet that I thought we should win … I just didn’t expect to win by so much.”

Andy Ferguson of Snohomish won the 100-yard butterfly with a state meet qualifying time of 54.77 seconds and teammate Dan Shurtz won the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle.

“I was really impressed with Dan Shurtz today,” Serviss said. Serviss also praised freshman Ken McClelland, who swam on two first-place relays and was competitive in the 100 freestyle, finishing second to Shurtz.

Chris Fulton added a state-qualifying time (1:50.18) in the 200 freestyle for the Panthers.

Kamiak is rebuilding, Serviss said, but thanks to freshmen Zack Harrington and Thayer Trotter, the Knights have a bright future. Harrington won the 100 backstroke and Thayer placed first in the 500 freestyle.

“It was fun to get to watch them swim,” Serviss said.
