Snohomish teammates to meet in singles final

STANWOOD – Snohomish teammates Chad Merkley and Brandon Kent will play for the Wesco North boys tennis singles championship. Meanwhile, the doubles semifinals will be an all-Stanwood vs. Snohomish affair.

Merkley and Kent survived quarterfinal and semifinal matches Friday at Stanwood High School.

Stanwood’s top-seeded doubles team of Daniel Redfern and Zach Tafoya will take on fifth-seeded Reed Pecha and Zack Stockwell of Snohomish in one semifinal. Second-seeded Drew Kidd and Kyle Koetje of Stanwood face fourth-seeded Andy Bell and Aaron Sher in the other.

Sixth-seeded Rhett Bouche of Mountlake Terrace upset third-seeded Matt Patterson of Kamiak to reach the semis. Fifth-seeded Abraham Ahn of Kamiak upset fourth seeded Jake Douglass of Shorewood in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, the top two seeded teams – Scott Sheldon and Willie Guo of Edmonds-Woodway and Jesse Knutson and Spencer Mestel of Shorewood – advanced to the semifinals. In the day’s most hotly contested match, fourth-seeded Nick Kang and Brian Bae of Jackson edged fifth-seeded John Khrapko and Danny Evans of Kamiak, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (8-10), 7-5.

Meadowdale advanced two doubles teams. Brothers Blaine and Jace Sherrill play Brian Sharkey and David Ehrlichman of Shorecrest in one semifinal. Lopez Island 3, Cedar Park Christian-Everett 0: At Everett, Lopez Island (11-0 league, 12-0 overall) remained unbeaten in the Northwest 1B League. With the loss, Cedar Park (2-8, 2-9) fell out of contention for the bi-district tournament, giving the league’s fourth and final playoff berth to Master’s Touch.
