BALTIMORE – It took a record-setting performance to beat Alicia Fliger at the 2006 National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships.
Fliger, who is about to enter her senior year at Snohomish High School, placed second in the young women’s hammer throw with a toss of 44.10 meters (144 feet, 8 inches) at the U.S. Track and Field event held July 25-30 in Hughes Stadium at Morgan State University.
Gabriella Midles of Camas broke the Junior Olympic and national youth record with a winning heave of 49.60 meters. The previous record of 49.37 meters was set in 2005 by Emily Bernhardt.
The championships are a national competition with entry based on athletic performances at preliminary, association and regional levels of the 2006 USAT Junior Olympic program. The following age divisions were featured: bantam (10 and under), midget (11-12), youth (13-14), intermediate (15-16) and young men/women (17-18).

Mill Creek Little League team narrowly misses World Series: The Mill Creek 11-12 fastpitch softball team came up one victory short Sunday at the Little League Girls Western Regional tournament in Vancouver, Wash.
Mill Creek lost in the championship game, falling 3-1 to a team from Gilroy, Calif. Gilroy advances to the Little League World Series, which begins Thursday at Alpenrose Field in Portland, Ore.
The Mill Creek team, which went 4-0 in winning the state tournament in July in Chehalis, advanced to the title game after defeating a team from Glendale, Ariz., 3-2 in the semifinals on Saturday.
Mill Creek finished 3-1 in pool play, outscoring its opponents 34-9. The team’s only loss before the title game was to a team from Salem, Ore., that went on to take third place in the tournament.
Mill Creek team members included Matti Tetzlaff, Lindsay Robison, Jessica Mirante, Megan Cooley, Bonnie Muscat, Elizabeth Aagard, Erin Bueser, Maddy Mertens, Dewey Davis, K.C. Wilson, Kelsey Mason, Lauren Stewart and Chandra Tewari. The team was coached by John Mirante and Kori Robinson and managed by Gil Ayala.
