Snohomish wins on last-play field goal

EVERETT — The Snohomish Panthers gave the Mariner Marauders a taste of their own medicine.

A year after the Marauders defeated Snohomish in overtime, the Panthers got revenge on a Dayton Wiseman 24-yard field goal as time expired, defeating Mariner 22-20 in a non-conference win Friday night at Goddard Stadium.

Wiseman and the Panthers set up for the attempt with two seconds left on the clock.

Mariner (3-2 overall) tried to ice the senior by calling back-to-back timeouts, but the kicker split the uprights and gave Snohomish its fourth victory in five tries.

“We made a couple of mistakes, they made some big runs and passes, but we didn’t panic,” Snohomish head coach Mark Perry said.

The game-winner wouldn’t have been set up if it wasn’t for a tough defensive play by Panther cornerback Terrence Marshall.

Marshall stripped Mariner running back Jaren Saga with 2:14 remaining in the game, just one play after the Panthers had turned the ball over on downs.

“Marshall came through. He took the ball and I knew we were going to be okay,” Perry said.

Marshall turned around on offense and come up with the biggest play of the final drive, catching a third-and-10 pass from quarterback Brad Perry for 16 yards and a Panthers first down with just over a minute to play in the game.

The Panthers then went to their bruiser, running back Derek Jones, for 16 more yards setting up Wiseman’s 24-yard attempt.

Jones added to his Wesco North leading total by rushing 26 times for 208 yards and a touchdown.

Snohomish (4-1) led 19-14 going into the final quarter but the Marauders bounced back, stopping the Panthers on their first drive of the fourth quarter, three-and-out.

The Marauders then marched 80 yards for a touchdown, which was set up by a 37-yard reception from Tyler Tuiasosopo to Shaundell Burns.

Tuiasosopo then connected with Michael Johnson on an 11-yard touchdown reception giving the Marauders a 20-19 lead.

It was flashback from last season when Tuiasosopo hit Johnson from 37 yards out, knotting the score at 21-21.

“There were a lot of similarities,” Perry said, referring to last year’s game.

Mariner would win the game in overtime handing Snohomish the second of its five straight losses.

The Marauders’ two-point attempt came up short when Burns was stopped on a pass attempt.

Tuiasosopo finished 6-for-13 with 122 yards passing and two touchdowns.

He hit Adrien Black for an 11-yard TD pass on Mariner’s opening drive of the game.

Black finished with two catches for 28 yards and added five carries for 84 yards and a 62-yard touchdown run.

The Marauders struggled through parts of the first half, committing a red zone turnover in each of the first two quarters.

The Panthers recovered a Burns fumble on their own 5-yard line then marched 95 yards on 10 plays for a 13-7 lead.

Panther running back Cameron Woolsey led the Snohomish charge with a 35-yard run and added a TD run of 6 yards.

Perry added 90 yards on five carries for the Panthers.

Burns led the Marauders with 85 rushes on 10 carries.
