Snohomish wins soccer opener

LAKE STEVENS – Courtney Schneider scored the only goal in the 52nd minute to lead Snohomish to a 1-0 Western Conference North Division girls soccer victory over Lake Stevens Thursday at Lake Stevens High School.

“For our first game we played well and got all of our first game jitters out of us,” said Snohomish head coach Dan Pingrey.

Snohomish goalkeepers Emmy Cornwell and Ashley Andelian combined to shutout the Vikings.

“Lake Stevens was solid and gave us fits, they’re a good team,” Pingrey said.

Snohomish was co-champion of the Wesco 4A last season, while Lake Stevens was the runnerup in the Wesco 3A.

Monroe 2, Mount Vernon 1: Ashley Nelson had two assists to lead Monroe to the Wesco North victory.

Snohomish 3, Mountlake Terrace 1: At Snohomish, Megan Silver had 12 kills to propel the Panthers (1-0) to a 15-3, 12-15, 15-10, 15-5 non-conference win. Mountlake Terrace is 1-1.

Cascade 3, Kamiak 1: At Cascade, Danielle Selvidge had 11 kills and Brittany Bekins had 23 assists for the Bruins in their 13-15, 15-3, 15-13, 15-6 non-conference victory. Cascade is 1-0. Kamiak is 0-1.

Mariner 3, Arlington 1: At Arlington, Melissa Kessell had five kills, eight blocks and seven digs and Tierra Campbell had six kills and nine blocks to lead Mariner (1-0 overall) to a 15-12, 8-15, 16-14, 18-16 non-league win. Priscilla Bernaola had eight digs and six kills and Vicki Frank had eight kills for Arlington (0-1).

Stanwood 3, Lynnwood 1: At Stanwood, Jenna Von Moos and Lauren Amundson combined for 49 assists and teammates Christina Palmer and Katelin Parks combined for 27 kills for Stanwood (1-0) in a 15-11, 15-9, 15-17, 15-13 non-conference victory. Jenna Huston led Lynnwood (0-1) with eight kills and seven service aces.

Everett 3, Lake Stevens 2: At Lake Stevens, Morgan Vagge had 12 kills and Emily Olson had 30 assists to lead Everett (1-0) to the 15-9, 15-9, 12-15, 2-15, 15-2 non-league victory. Deanna Cooper led Lake Stevens (0-1) with 17 kills, while serving 20-for-20.

Granite Falls 3, Lakewood 0: At Granite Falls, Denise Wilbur had 16 kills and Ashley Quinn served up 31 assists to lead Granite Falls (1-0) to a 15-0, 15-9, 15-10 non-league victory. Lakewood is 0-1.

Life Christian 3, King’s 0: Amy Frederick had 30 assists to lead Life Christian to the 15-10, 15-10, 15-11 Chinook League triumph.

Seattle Lutheran 3, Snohomish County Christian: At Seattle Lutheran, the Lions took the first game but could not muster another as they fell 10-15, 15-6, 15-7, 15-2 in the non-conference match.
