Snohomish wins tennis showdown with Cascade

SNOHOMISH – And then there was one.

In a Western Conference North Division tennis showdown on Monday afternoon, Snohomish defeated Cascade 4-3 in a battle of unbeaten teams.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 6-0. Cascade slipped to 5-1 and is tied with Stanwood for second place in the division.

In his first match of the year at No. 1 singles, senior Tyler Christensen won in straight sets. But the match of the day was at No. 4 doubles as Snohomish’s John Markey and Trevor Pratt won in three sets over Cory Kollmeyer and Russ Millar, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) in what turned out to be the difference in the final outcome.

All seven matches were “as tight as can be,” said Panthers coach Dick Jensen. “It was a very close, very tight match. It came down to the bitter end. They were all hotly contested.”

Meadowdale 5, Jackson 2: Brandon Lucero won in three sets in a match that lasted three hours, 20 minutes to lead the Mavericks to the Wesco South Division victory over the Timberwolves.

Coupeville 3, Granite Falls 0: At Granite Falls H.S., Ashley Quinn had 10 assists and Becky Kirchgessner had seven kills in the Tigers’ 12-15, 7-15, 9-15 non-league loss to the Wolves. Granite Falls drops to 2-1 overall and Coupeville improves to 1-1.

Darrington 3, Concrete 0: At Darrington H.S., Amy Jones had six kills as well as 7-for-7 serving, and Kelsie Padgett was also 7-for-7 serving with two aces in the Loggers’ 15-5, 15-1, 15-8 non-conference victory over the Lions. Darrington improves to 3-0 overall. Concrete falls to 0-1.

Evergreen Lutheran 3, Snohomish County Christian 1: At Snohomish County Christian, the Lions dropped the non-conference match 8-15, 5-15, 15-13 and 9-15. SCC’s record falls to 0-3.
