Snohomish’s Hammons no-hits Oak Harbor in his first career start

SNOHOMISH – It sounds too good to be true: throwing a no-hitter in your first varsity start and on your sister’s birthday, which also happens to be April Fool’s Day.

Junior pitcher Jake Hammons took the mound as the Snohomish starter for the first time in his varsity career Thursday. Seven innings, 10 strikeouts, zero walks and only one base runner later, he completed a no-hitter for the Panthers, 4-0 winners over Oak Harbor in a Western Conference North Division baseball game.

“And that’s no April Fool’s joke,” chuckled Snohomish coach Kim Hammons, who is Jake’s father.

The only Oak Harbor batter to reach base got there on catcher’s interference in the third inning.

As far as debuts go, this one is tough to top, Kim Hammons said.

“How can you beat that? We just hope he gets out there and gives us good, quality innings.”

With the no-hitter, Jake gave his sister, Cadi, an unusual 26th birthday present. He also drove in the first run, giving Snohomish the lead for good with an RBI single to right field in the first.

Jake was forced to start because of several recent injuries to Snohomish starters. “He responded,” Kim Hammons said. “He pitched a real good ball game and kept the ball down.”

Outstanding Snohomish defense preserved the no-hitter. Center fielder Pat Job made a diving catch in left center and left fielder Gavin Heinemann made a catch at the wall.

Heinemann also provided a bases-loaded, three-run double to the left field gap to give the Panthers breathing room in the fifth.
