They’re not looking to eclipse last year’s record, just repeat it.

The SC Eclipse U14 boys scored all of their goals in the first half and went on to post a 3-0 victory over the Federal Way Bulldogs in a state cup quarterfinal game Saturday. The Lake Stevens-based Eclipse, the defending 2001 Commissioners Cup champions, move on to the semifinals Feb. 23 at Sammamish High School.

After Brady Dickinson’s power shot scored the opening goal, left wing Kyle Warrington dribbled past a defender and down the sideline. He cut inside and booted a cross that richocheted off a Bulldog player into the net. Warrington added an unassisted goal later in the half.

“He’s just a very quick left wing,” Eclipse coach Chris Guenther said.

Eclipse goalie Zach Hardwick backed up the strong Eclipse defense and helped preserve the shutout.

“He had two very good saves and he’s just been outstanding these last four games,” Guenther said of Hardwick who has recorded four straight shutouts.

“The whole defense has been outstanding, especially over the last half of the season.”

The Eclipse, which placed first in the Adams Division in the fall season, improved its overall record to 14-2-3, including a 4-0-1 mark in the tournament.

Guenther noted the outstanding play of sweeper Aaron Leonard and defender Brent Wise, but cited the overall team effort as the key to the Eclipse’s bid for a second straight title.

“All of these guys have tremendous listening skills and great technical skills,” Guenther said. “They’re very down to earth and I’m just very proud of the team.”

Repeat titles don’t come easy, but Guenther says his squad will make the most of its chance.

“We’re going to try and go for it,” Guenther said.
