Softball Players to watch

Lexie Levin

Everett | P/1B/OF

2010 recap: .535 batting average, .670 on base percentage, 46 hits, 12 double, five triples, seven home runs and 41 RBI. Second team all-area pitcher, first team all-Wesco utility player.

College plans: Undecided

2011 outlook: L

evin’s numbers from a year ago were extremely impressive, which leads Everett coach Kyle Peacocke to think it would be hard for her to surpass what she did last season. “I think it would be tough to put the pressure on her to top the numbers she had last year,” Peacocke said. “One thing that she has going for her is that she has some very big hitters around her, it makes it more difficult to pitch around her,” Peacocke added. “I think both Lexie and the team have high expectations of themselves.”

Riley Fritz

Marysville-Pilchuck | P/3B/2B

2010 recap: .359 batting average, .464 on base percentage, 2.85 earned run average, 76 strikeouts. Only struck out once all season (final at-bat of the year), committed no errors defensively. First team all-Wesco pitcher.

College plans: Whitworth

2011 outlook: Fritz is a co-captain this year along with Megan Rollings. Her numbers on the mound may not stand out the way some power pitchers do, but coach KT Allyn says she pitches to contact very well and a solid defensive unit backs her up nicely. “Thanks to her commitment to both academics and softball, she earned a sizeable academic scholarship to Whitworth University and will play ball for them next year,” Allyn said.

Amber Manuel

Archbishop Murphy | P

2010 recap: .429 batting average, 17 singles, eight doubles, four home runs, 16 walks and 24 RBI. Earned the “Wildcat Award” as voted on by her teammates last year for someone who is a team player, quality player and someone who goes above and beyond what is asked of them. Manuel was also named co-defensive MVP by the coaches in the Cascade Conference.

College plans: Whitworth

2011 outlook: Manuel is the team’s only pitcher for the second year in a row and one of the key offensive players on the Wildcats squad. After putting up great numbers last year, coach Stephanie Arland expects to see great things from her this season. One of Manual’s goals this year is to not only be defensive MVP, but offensive MVP of the Cascade Conference as well. Arland feels as long as she works hard she has a great chance to achieve that. “She is one of the players that every coach loves to have because she wants to learn, she wants to work hard and she wants to be out there,” Arland said.

Lindsay Robison

Jackson | P/1B/3B

2010 recap: .544 batting average, led the team in doubles in 2010. First team Wesco South third baseman

College plans: BYU Hawaii

2011 outlook: Robison was Jackson’s leading hitter last season on the team that finished tied for third at the 4A state tournament and coach Mike Moran expects much of the same this season. Robison has been voted a team captain for the upcoming season. Moran said Robison is a line-drive hitter and not a real big power hitter, but he added, “She has the power to and occasionally she will put a jolt into one.”

“She is very calm and poised, not much fools her,” Moran said. “She will be looked to to produce as well as she did last year.”

Kelsey Parker

Lynnwood | C/SS/2B

2010 recap: .457 batting average, 10 doubles, four triples, two home runs. Struck out just twice all season.

College plans: Wagner College (New York)

2011 outlook: “We expect a lot out of her this season,” Lynnwood coach Matt Rockne said. “She’s been mostly a catcher, but we’re hoping to move her around a little this year with the addition of new players. No matter where we put her in the field, she strengthens that position; whether it be shortstop, second base, catching, outfield…it doesn’t matter.”

“She’s clearly an offensive threat as well, she can hit the ball to all fields, with power,” Rockne added. “She’s very softball smart as well. We’re looking for her leadership role to blossom this year as we have a lot of younger girls on the team who can surely benefit from her character and skills.”
