SOFTBALL ROUNDUP

ARLINGTON — Down 3-0 in the third inning, Arlington proved the importance of persistence Friday, defeating Cascade 5-4 in nine innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Arlington got back-to-back singles from Allie Milless and Kristen Allen. Kalie Basher came to the plate for the Eagles and hit a grounder to the first baseman, who attempted to apply the tag to Basher but lost control of the ball and was unable to make the final out, allowing Milless to score the winning run from second base.

“It was a very well played game by both teams,” Arlington coach Dan Eng said. “You have to give credit to that Cascade team. They came to our field and they came to take the game.”

Cascade’s hitters had some success getting to Christina Rayner, something that most opposing teams have struggled with all season

“She was not off her game. They just had a great game plan. I have to tip my hat to them,” Eng said.

Rayner had been averaging 15.6 strikeouts per game, according to Eng. She was held to just 10 in nine innings on Friday.

“I feel very fortunate that we won that game,” Eng said.

Samantha Munger pitched a complete game for Cascade in defeat, striking out six.
