Sommer leads Snohomish to victory over Kamiak

Herald staff

MUKILTEO – Ryan Sommer sparked a Snohomish 26-7 run in the third quarter to knock off the defending Western Conference boys basketball champion Kamiak Knights 58-39 Tuesday night in a non-conference game.

After leading 25-19 at halftime, Snohomish’s Sommer scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter, including three 3-pointers. When the dust had settled the Panthers had a 25-point lead 51-26.

“They would penetrate into the middle and then kick it back out to Sommer,” Kamiak coach Jeff Leary said of the third quarter.

Kamiak’s Jamaul Jackson scored nine of his 10 points in the fourth quarter and had 14 rebounds to lead the Knights. Chris Grounds also finished with 10 points.

Snohomish used experience and defensive pressure to keep the young Knights off-balance.

“They returned nine seniors and we have a young team,” Leary said.

Josh O’Conner made his defensive pressure felt by hampering Kamiak’s guards up and down the court, according to Leary.

Senior Matt Holzer added eight points as senior teammate Scott Shine had nine points for Snohomish.
