MARYSVILLE – Around here they’ve come to call it “Soper Time” and the locals will get to enjoy at least one more round.
Hot-shooting Charlie Soper buried six 3-point baskets en route to 24 points to lead Marysville-Pilchuck to a 63-50 victory over the Everett Seagulls in a 4A Northwest District tournament loser-out game Friday night.
M-P (12-10) advanced to play Mariner in a loser-out game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Marysville-Pilchuck. The young and talented Seagulls (13-9) saw their season come to an end.
“We’ve got five seniors with a shot to keep it going,” M-P coach Mike Lowery said. “We have great respect for Everett and its coaches. They are a class act and a quality program.”
A class act and a fast act.
The Seagulls jumped out to a 12-5 lead behind Adam Moore and Sam Wertheimer midway into the first quarter before Soper gummed up the works with his long-range highjinks.
His first 3-pointer launched a 13-2 run to stake the Tommies to a lead they never surrendered. He hit two more treys as M-P closed out the half with a 13-4 run to build a 31-20 lead.
Behind by as many as 13, Everett’s Moore keyed a valiant comeback bid with 17 second-half points and made a pair of clutch free throws that brought the Seagulls to within 54-50 with 1:51 remaining.
M-P answered as cool-handed Nick Harris hit four straight free throws, Soper sank 3-of-4 from the line and Marquis Pittman capped his 17 point night with a bucket as time wound down on Everett’s season.
“We knew Everett was very good,” Soper said. “We just wanted to play together as a team.”
Everett’s Moore led all scorers with 25 points and collared eight rebounds. Wertheimer added 11 points and seven boards.
The Tommies enjoyed a big lift from center Chris Gill who hauled down 11 rebounds to go along with seven points. He also menaced the Seagulls with three blocked shots.
“He’s gotten a lot more aggressive and is playing with confidence,” Lowery said of Gill.
