SEATTLE – The Seattle Sounders enter the final weekend of A-League soccer play on the brink.
The Sounders need a combination of two victories over first place Vancouver and a loss or tie by any of a number of other teams to avoid being eliminated from the league playoff picture for the first time since 1994.
Eight teams are vying for the final four playoff berths entering the final weekend of the regular season. The Sounders enter the weekend in 13th place, with the top 12 teams advancing to postseason play.
The Sounders will play a home-and-home series with the Whitecaps beginning tonight at Swangard Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia. The return match will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
Seattle will be a bit short-handed tonight, with coach Bernie James and players Kieran Barton and Viet Nguyen suspended because of accumulated red- and yellow-card points.
Seattle and Vancouver have split two games so far this season.
Fans bringing a non-perishable food item to Saturday’s game for donation for Northwest Harvest will receive a $5 discount on an adult general admission ticket as well as up to four complimentary youth tickets.
