SEATTLE — The Seattle Sounders have completed the transfer of forward Obafemi Martins to Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League for an undisclosed sum.
The Sounders announced completion of the awaited move Thursday. Martins signed with Seattle as a designated player in March 2013 and scored 40 goals in 72 total appearances with the Sounders.
Martins left the Sounders during preseason training in California and announced his intention to move to Shanghai Shenhua on Feb. 17. The 31-year-old scored 15 goals in 21 regular-season games last year with the Sounders.
Seattle general manager Garth Lagerwey says the Martins move will give the club roster and salary cap flexibility headed into the 2016 season and opens up a designated player position.
