SHORELINE — In a bit of an upset, the Wesco South All-Star Girls defeated the soccer team from the North 3-2 on penalty kicks.
The South team featured first- and second-team all-league selections as well as a few honorable mention players, but injuries and other commitments meant it had few subs to start the game and was down to 11 players when the contest ended. One of those players was a loaner from the North to help in goal. Another, who had showed up to just watch, suited up at half.
Glacier Peak’s Hailey Garrity scored what proved to be the winning goal on the fourth round of penalties. But at the time her mind was likely at least partially on her teammate, Brooke Gilbert, who was taken off the field in an ambulance in the first half.
Gilbert completed what looked like a routine slide tackle in a slight collision with a player from the North with nine minutes to go in the opening half. She remained sitting on the turf long enough for the Shoreline Fire Department to send over an ambulance and cart her off the field. The injury was a very deep laceration below the knee that required stitches. No one seemed to know what exactly caused it.
“It was the strangest thing I’ve ever seen,” Glacier Peak and South coach Melinda Torre said.
After the victory, the sentiment was that Gilbert would be fine and the South team was happy to have won.
“It’s awesome.” Torre said. “It’s been a while since the South has won a game.”
The South took a 2-1 lead when Jackson’s Ellen Favale’s header made it by goalkeeper Chelsea Boulton of Arlington.
Favale was asked to play at halftime when her teammate from Jackson, Megan Bolmes, suffered a minor injury. With Gilbert out for the second half, Favale pulled on a No. 13 Jersey and headed in a cross from fellow Timberwolf Brianna Ellis in the 49th minute.
Shorecrest’s Christina Jarvis opened the scoring in the third minute.
Everett’s Annie Sittauer, who will play soccer for the UW in the fall, beat Glacier Peak’s Nicole Giovine in goal to even the score at 1-1 in the 26th minute.
Sittauer tied the game for the North when she gave the ball up with a perfect pass to Lake Stevens Kinslee Isaman in the 63rd minute.
