South Whidbey has nine pins in win over G. Falls

LANGLEY – Ben Morgan, a regional participant last season, led South Whidbey to a 54-28 Cascade Conference victory over Granite Falls Thursday with a pin at 145 pounds.

“He had a really good match,” Granite Falls coach Tony Helgeson said. “It was a momentum turner.”

Freshman Zach Jones got Granite Falls off to a great start with a pin at 189 pounds.

“He had a great match against Richard Rangel,” Helgeson said. “We were surprised. We didn’t think he’d get get a pin but he did.”

Twelve of the 14 bouts ended with pins, nine by undefeated South Whidbey (1-0 league, 4-0 overall).

“It was a good little head-to-head battle,” said Helgeson, whose team was coming off its first dual-meet win since 1997.

Concrete 42, Darrington 26: At Darrington, Stormee Brown (21-5 overall) and Conner Rounds (21-2) remained unbeaten in Northwest 1A/2B League matches with wins at 140 and 215 pounds, respectively. Darrington’s Paden Newberry pinned his 160-pound opponent in 30 seconds to improve to 18-4.

Boys swimming

Marysville-Pilchuck 110, Stanwood 73: At Marysville, Trevor LeValley, swimming the 100-yard backstroke for the first time this season, swam a state meet qualifying time of 57.03 seconds and participated on two winning relay teams to lead M-P to the Wesco North win. Zach McCune won two individual races and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team for Stanwood.
