South Whidbey still alive at District 1 tournament

MOUNT VERNON – The South Whidbey Falcons girls soccer team kept its season alive with a 2-0 loser-out Class 2A District 1 playoff victory over Cascade Conference rival Granite Falls Wednesday night at Mount Vernon High School.

With the victory South Whidbey (11-8) will face yet another conference foe, Archbishop Murphy (15-3), in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 11 a.m. Saturday, again at Mount Vernon High School.

Gracy Itaya scored both of South Whidbey’s goals.

Granite Falls ended its season with a 7-12 record.

Burlington-Edison 4, Lakewood 0: At Mount Vernon, Katie Griffith scored two goals, Keri Arendse added two assists and goalkeeper Caitlan Dotlich recorded the shutout for Burlington-Edison, which moves on to face Sehome in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon High School.

With the loss Lakewood’s season ends at 7-12.

At Mount Vernon H.S.

Goals-B-E: Griffith 2, Latham, own goal. Assists-B-E: Arendse 2. Goalkeepers-B-E: Dotlich. Lakewood: Steinborn. Records-Lakewood 7-12 overall. B-E not reported.

Meadowdale 3, Ferndale 2: At Ferndale, the Mavericks needed five games but came out victorious against the host Golden Eagles, 27-25, 20-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-12 at the Class 3 A District 1 tournament.

Meadowdale was led by Katie Cowan’s 37 assists and 11 digs. Brianna Dyson added 12 kills and Annelie Fjotoft added eight kills and 26 digs for the Mavericks. Meadowdale will face Mount Vernon on Saturday for a chance to play for the second and final state birth. The Mavericks beat the Bulldogs in the first round of the playoffs, 3-2.

Mount Vernon 3, Lynnwood 2: At Ferndale, the Bulldogs defeated the Royals in five games (24-26, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-13), setting up a Class 3A rematch with Meadowdale on Saturday. Lynnwood was led by Nicole Mays and her four service aces and 11 kills. Kaytlyn Dill added 15 kills and four blocks, Abrianna Hill had seven kills and five blocks, and Heather McCartney had 22 assists for the Royals.

Cedarcrest 3, Mount Baker 1: At Blaine, Amber Shields recorded 35 assists and the Red Wolves beat the Mountaineers in four games at the Class 2A District 1 tournament, 25-18, 25-27, 25-23, 25-19. Shields added five service aces and 10 digs while Kaylen McRae and Kristen McKinlay combined for 15 kills for Cedarcrest.

Burlington-Edison 3, Cedarcrest 0: At Blaine, the Tigers made quick work of the Red Wolves in their next match, sweeping them 25-12, 25-17, 25-20. Amber Shields recorded 13 assists, and Kristen McKinlay added four kills and two blocks for Cedarcrest. The Red Wolves will face Sehome on Saturday in a bid for a state berth.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Sehome 2: At Langley, the Wildcats needed five games to beat the Mariners and move into a winner-to-state match. No details were available.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Lynden 2: At Langley, Archbishop Murphy picked up the tough five-game win (24-26, 20-25, 25-19, 25-15, 15-8) to qualify for the state tournament. They will face Burlington-Edison Saturday in the championship match to determine the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds to state.
