South Whidbey still perfect

LANGLEY – How do you score against Christie Robinson and the South Whidbey Falcons? Eleven games into the season, and still no one has an answer.

Winning pitcher Robinson struck out 17 batters and Jenna Dunsmore drove in the game’s only run as undefeated South Whidbey edged Nooksack Valley 1-0 Monday in a North Cascades league fastpitch softball duel.

South Whidbey (7-0 in league, 11-0 overall) has still not allowed a run this season. The Falcons have outscored opponents 74-0, according to head coach Todd Lubach. On a night when the offense was flat, Robinson (10-0) made sure one run was enough to win.

Robinson, who just missed tying her season-high strikeout total of 18, uses five pitches, up from three or four last year. This year her curveball is breaking harder, her changeup is slower and she mixes in an effective riseball, Lubach said.

No matter which lineup Robinson faces, the result seems to be the same.

“She has continued to do this,” Lubach said of Robinson, “and she’s done it against 3A teams and 4A teams. It’s not just the North Cascades 2A league that she’s doing this to.”

Robinson shutout Sedro-Woolley, Anacortes and Lynnwood – all Class 3A schools – earlier this season.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Dunsmore hit a bloop single to right-center field that drove in Kelsey Broderick from second base. Dunsmore was 2-for-3, as was teammate Carrie Anderson.

South Whidbey defeated Nooksack Valley (2-4, 3-4) without senior Bronwyn Russell, who is hitting better than .500. Russell missed the game due to a college visit in California. A team usually stumbles without its star hitter, but this Falcons group sticks together, Lubach said.

“I think they are closer knit. They get along with each other. There’s probably more team unity (this year).”
