LANGLEY – The young South Whidbey volleyball team made its Cascade Conference debut with a splash Monday night by knocking off Sultan 3-0.
The Falcons, who have only two seniors on the team and one returning starter from last season, won by scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-14. Jessie Eaton contributed 19 assists to the sweep, and Caitie Newman added seven kills.
“Our team passed the ball well,” Falcons coach Tim Durbin said. “We showed some nice improvement over our first game of the year (a 3-0 loss to La Conner).”
Durbin said he saw improvement over the weekend at the SunDome Classic volleyball tournament in Yakima. South Whidbey held tough with Burlington-Edison and won two games against Squalicum, a team the Falcons could eventually meet in the Northwest District 3A tournament.
“We hope to see a very different (South Whidbey) team in three weeks down the road as we continue to improve,” Durbin said.
Bear Creek 3, Snohomish County Christian 0: At Mountlake Terrace, Bear Creek won in three close games; 25-15, 25-22, 26-24. Freshman Elyse Bunger contributed 7 assists for Snohomish County Christian in the non-league game.
Girls soccer
Granite Falls 7, Foster 0: Granite Falls rolled to a victory with a pair of players scoring a two goals each. Lauren Bailey and Kelly Mitchell piled up four goals combined to lead Granite Falls to a non-conference victory. Granite Falls improved to 2-1, and Foster dropped to 0-2.
