South Whidbey basketball star Lewis Pope and Stanwood wrestling phenom Mason Phillips earned Athlete of the Week honors from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association for Dec. 31 through Jan. 6.
Pope, a senior, recorded 40 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Falcons’ Jan. 5 win over Granite Falls. The Central Washington University signee also had 25 points, seven rebounds and three steals in a Jan. 2 victory over Cedar Park Christian-Bothell.
Pope is averaging more than 20 points per game this season for South Whidbey (11-4).
Phillips, a senior, won the 152-pound title at The Gut Check wrestling tournament Jan. 6 in Bremerton. The University of North Carolina commit cruised to the title with three pins, a major decision and a technical fall.
