EVERETT – Winners of seven straight, the AquaSox entered Monday’s game as the hottest team in the Northwest League.
They ended it 11 innings later and with their first loss in over a week.
The Everett AquaSox had their seven game win streak come to an end Monday night, losing 4-2 to the Tri-City Dust Devils in an 11-inning game at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Tri-City’s Darin Holcomb’s run-scoring triple in the top of the 11th off of Sox reliever Aaron Brown (2-1) proved to be the game winner and Tri-City took the fourth game of the five-game series from the AquaSox.
Everett (19-28), which had no problem putting runs on the board during the streak, wasn’t able to get its offense going in Monday’s game.
The Sox put two runs on the board in the fourth but failed to get a runner to third base the rest of the game.
Everett averaged over seven runs during the win streak and scored at least five in each of those games.
“They pitched very well. Their starter did a good job and their bullpen did a very good job,” AquaSox manager Mike Tosar said.
Tri-City pitchers struck out 14 AquaSox hitters.
Starter Robinson Fabian went seven innings, striking out eight, and relievers Matt Reynolds (1-1, four strikeouts) and Agustine Arias shut down the Frogs through the final four innings.
Everett’s starter, Juan Ramirez, was solid as well, allowing two runs over six innings.
“Ramirez did very good. Hill came in and did a great job and Aaron Brown came in and did a good job,” Tosar said in reference to his pitchers.
Hill went two shutout innings, allowing only one hit, and Brown, with the exception of the two pitches that he left up in the zone and resulted in back-to-back 11th inning RBI base hits, went three innings and struck out four.
While the AquaSox pitchers were doing their job in shutting down the Dust Devils, the hitters failed to do what they had done so well during the team’s seven-game win streak.
Everett grounded into two inning-ending double plays and failed to hit a home run for the first time in seven games.
“The effort was there. We competed well … we played a solid 10 innings,” Tosar said.
Everett first baseman Kris Sanchez continued his hot August hitting, finishing 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.
The left-handed hitting Sanchez is batting .348 in August with six RBI and six runs scored.
Sanchez’s single in the fourth scored Edilio Colina and a batter later Manelik Pimentel (2-for-3) would drive in Sanchez tying the score at 2-2.
The score would remain tied until the 11th when Holcomb, who finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, recorded his 29th RBI of the season by knocking in Helder Velazquez.
Phillip Cuadrado (2-for-5, two RBI) scored Holcomb with a single for the two-run difference.
The two teams wrap-up their series today with a 12:05 p.m. start.
