BOISE, Idaho – Getting away from the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes didn’t make any difference for the Everett AquaSox.

Everett was on the wrong side of a lopsided score for the fourth straight game, falling 8-2 to the Boise Hawks on Friday night in Northwest League action.

The AquaSox thought they were getting a break by leaving behind West Division-leading Salem-Keizer, which just swept a three-game series in Everett by an aggregate score of 30-6. But Friday’s game in Boise was more of the same for the AquaSox (24-28), who fell behind 7-0 after four innings and never threatened the lead.

Steven Clevenger and Matt Canepa each had two hits and scored two runs, and Park Pawelek turned in a solid start for Boise (29-23), which won its fourth straight.

Jair Fernandez was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Everett.

The biggest difference between the two teams Friday was pitching control. Everett’s pitchers issued eight walks, six of which came in the first four innings as the Hawks grabbed control of the game. In contrast, Boise’s pitchers walked just one.

The biggest control culprit for Everett was starter Chris Tillman (0-1), who had an inauspicious Northwest League debut. The 18-year-old right-hander, the Seattle Mariners’ second-round pick in this year’s draft, lasted just 2 2/3 innings, in large part because of four walks. He struck out five, but he also gave up four hits to go along with the walks, leading to five runs.

Meanwhile, Boise starter Mark Pawelek (2-4) cruised, at one point retiring 14 straight. The left-hander ended up going 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs one earned on five hits, striking out five.

Boise opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Tillman got the first two outs, but then ran into trouble as the Hawks loaded the bases on a single and two walks. Matt Camp then lined a single to center, scoring two runs and giving Boise a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks extended their lead in the third. Tyler Colvin led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a passed ball. Clevenger added an RBI single, which knocked Tillman out of the game, and Deryck Lewis smacked an RBI triple to left-center, giving Boise a 5-0 lead.

Boise began making it a rout in the fourth. Colvin singled in a run and another scored on Russ Canzler’s fielder’s choice, increasing the lead to 7-0.

Everett finally got on the board in the seventh. The Sox loaded the bases with one out on consecutive singles by Danny Santin, Manelik Pimentel and Leury Bonilla, chasing Pawelek. Roberto Sotolongo relieved Pawelek and walked Fernandez to force in a run. Another run scored on catcher Canepa’s throwing error as Everett pulled within 7-2.

But that was all Everett could muster, and Boise finished off the scoring in the eighth when Canepa scored on Everett second baseman Dean Zorn’s throwing error.
