Spartans lock up North tennis title

SNOHOMISH – The Stanwood boys tennis team took another step toward perfection Monday.

The Western Conference North Division-leading Spartans defeated second-place Snohomish 5-2 at Snohomish High School, improving to 15-0 on the season and clinching the division title.

“Stanwood came down and did a great job and won a big match,” said Panthers head coach Dick Jansen. “I tip my hat to them.”

Stanwood’s team of Kyle Koetje and Drew Kidd won a three-set victory in the No. 2 doubles match, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Daniel Redfern and Zach Tafoya picked up wins in singles to help lift the Spartans past the Panthers.

With the division title locked up, the Spartans have just one game remaining – Wednesday at home against Everett – in their quest for an unbeaten season.

A win Monday would have given Snohomish (11-2) a chance to make a run at the division title. Now, however, the Panthers are alone in second place with three games remaining: today at Everett, Wednesday at Lake Stevens and Friday at home against Monroe.

Both Panthers victories came in singles. Andy Bell won the No. 3 singles match in straight sets and Brandon Kent triumphed in three sets in the No. 4 singles.
