It takes more than impressive strength to become a top-notch thrower. Technique and speed are crucial too.
Kirsten Smith, a senior on the Everett girls track and field team, appears to have it all.
After qualifying for the 2007 Class 3A state meet in all three throwing events (shot put, discus and javelin), Smith is having a fine 2008 season. She broke the school’s 27-year old discus record March 20 with a winning throw of 130 feet, 9 inches. Her mark bettered the old record by more than 4 feet.
Smith’s first-place shot put throw Thursday in a division meet traveled 38 feet, 4 inches. It’s further than any girl threw the shot at last season’s 3A state championships.
Asked what has been the key to Smith’s outstanding performances, Everett girls track coach Ned Prouse said: “Kirsten has really concentrated on working her speed and power during the offseason. She is a lot faster in the (thrower’s) ring.”
Added Prouse, “I’m excited to see how she progresses through the rest of the season.”
