Spencer carted off with ankle injury

The Seahawks’ starting center, Chris Spencer, had to be helped off the field and was then carted off after suffering an injury to his left ankle late in this morning’s practice.

Seahawks coach Jim Mora said after practice that he didn’t yet know the severity of the injury, but that “It doesn’t appear to be anything serious.” Mora added that tests still need to be done, but that early indications are that it isn’t the dreaded high ankle sprain.

And speaking of injuries, here’s the run-down of who sat out the morning practice:

WR Deion Branch (knee)

LT Walter Jones (back)

CB Marcus Trufant (back)

DT Cory Redding (general soreness)

LB Will Herring (groin)

On Branch, who has now missed three practices in a row, Mora said the oft-injured receiver was experiencing a little swelling in the knee, but that he could be back as soon as tonight’s practice. And just to be clear, Mora didn’t refer to Branch as oft-injured, that was me.

Redding isn’t injured, Mora said, just beat up after a week of camp. And if you’ve seen him practice (the guy has a pretty violent, aggressive style of doing things), that’s not hard to believe.

Mora said Herring is day-to-day with a groin injury.

A few highlights from today:

DE Darryl Tapp made some nice plays, and at one point beat Sean Locklear pretty bad on back-to-back play. Had it been a game with the quarterback open to contact, the first would have given him a free shot at Matt Hasselbeck, while the other likely would have resulted in a tackle for loss on a running play.

DE Nick Reed made a nice move to get into the backfield on one running play, but it would have been intersting to see in a game situation if it actually would have resulted in a tackled for loss. I say that because Reed, an undersized (to say the least) end, would have been trying to bring down T.J. Duckett, an oversized (to say the least) running back at 254 pounds.

And one last reminder that tonight’s practice at 6:45 is at Husky Stadium and is open to the public.
