SPOKANE – Christmas may have passed, but the Silvertips were in the giving mood Friday night.

Everett gifted Spokane three goals, and the Silvertips went down hard, falling 5-2 to the Chiefs in a Western Hockey League game.

Kyle Howarth scored twice straight off Everett turnovers and Jeff Lynch also tallied off an Everett mistake. Adam Hobson and Seth Compton added goals for the Chiefs (16-21-7-1), who outshot the Silvertips 36-15.

Ivan Baranka and Alex Leavitt scored for Everett (21-17-6-2), which is now winless in its last eight road games.

Things went wrong right from the beginning for Everett as the first period proved to be a disaster.

It began on an Everett power play when Lynch stole the puck from Mitch Love, broke away and scored his 12th of the season at 6:26. The Chiefs made it 2-0 at 10:16, Hobson putting in a rebound for his ninth goal of the season. Spokane scored again on the rebound at 12:02 when Compton scored his second of the season.

When the dust had settled Everett trailed 3-0 and starting goaltender Leland Irving had been pulled after giving up three goals on seven shots. Michael Wall replaced Irving after Spokane’s third goal.

In the second period, Howarth twice took advantage of Everett turnovers in the defensive zone. First he picked Leavitt’s pocket and scored on a breakaway at 8:35. After Baranka scored his fifth of the season on a blast from the point on the power play at 11:31, Howarth received another gift, taking advantage of a mixup between Jonathan Harty and Shaun Heshka in front of the goal to score at 19:15. The two goals gave Howarth seven this season.

Leavitt scored a consolation goal for Everett at 13:34 of the third period, intercepting a pass and blowing a shot past Spokane goalie Kevin Opsahl.

Slap shots: Everett welcomed centers Zach Hamill and Mark Kress back to the lineup Friday. Hamill missed two weeks because of blurry vision, Kress was out six weeks because of a fractured arm. … Everett was without left wing Michael Wuchterl. He received a one-game suspension from the league for his five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding in Everett’s 3-1 home victory over Spokane last Sunday.
