LAKE STEVENS – Controversy surrounded the outcome of the Wesco 4A North girls track and field meet Friday at Lake Stevens High School.
Snohomish avoided that controversy by comfortably claiming first place.
The girls pole vault results were nowhere to be found, leaving the scores of nine different girls a mystery until later this weekend.
Snohomish had clinched the team title regardless of the pole vault results, but the next five teams, and their final placings hang in the balance until the scoring is complete.
Kara Sporrong led the way for Snohomish, winning the 3,200-meter run in 11 minutes, 20 seconds. Sporrong finished second behind Oak Harbor’s Mietra Smollack in the 1,600. Smollack set a Wesco North record with a time of 5:01 in the race.
Smollack would also claim first in the 800 with a time of 2:19, edging out Carly McBride by less than a second.
Stanwood’s Colleen Mess taking home the pole vault with a mark of 11 ft.
Brittany Aanstad of Lake Stevens, who won the 4A Javelin event last year, repeated with a Wesco North and stadium-record throw of 144 feet 7 inches. Aanstad also cleared 5-3 in the high jump to take home first place. Aanstad recently signed a letter-of-intent to compete for Seattle Pacific University next season.
