SEATTLE – Rubbing salt in the wound nearly left St. Louis Rams receiver Isaac Bruce in need of some gauze for himself.
Following the Rams’ improbable 33-27 win over the Seahawks at Qwest Field on Sunday afternoon, Bruce infuriated the south end zone fans by placing his helmet on the 20-yard line and doing a celebratory dance. A few fans threw plastic bottles in his direction before teammates pulled Bruce to the safety of the tunnel.
“I’m used to that,” Bruce said in the Rams’ locker room a few minutes later. “I’m from the ‘hood.”
The Seahawks didn’t find the post-game celebration quite so amusing.
“We respect them for winning, but all that stuff, that’s for kids,” Seahawks middle linebacker Orlando Huff said. “When it comes down to it, it’s all about victories in this league. Little stuff like that, if they want to do that, so be it. We’re going to play them again. We’re not going to forget.”
One person who refused to talk about Bruce’s antics was Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin. He was the first player to stand up to Bruce on the field, as the two jawed at each other while Bruce danced. Seahawks assistant coach Stump Mitchell pulled Hamlin away before the incident escalated.
“Don’t ask me about that,” Hamlin said in the locker room when a reporter brought up Bruce’s dance a few minutes later.
The Rams’ victory ended Seattle’s 10-game home winning streak, which dated back to Week 16 of the 2002 season.
St. Louis, which had its own 15-game home winning streak snapped two weeks ago, will host the Seahawks on Nov. 14.
The division title “might still go through Seattle. Who knows?” Bruce said. “It’s early in the season. They’re a good team at home. They’re becoming a good team on the road. They’ve got good players. So, maybe.”
