TACOMA — Dignitaries used baseball bats Tuesday to knock down part of the outfield wall at Cheney Stadium to begin a $30 million renovation project.
Tacoma Rainiers spokeswoman Alyson Jones says part of the wall had been replaced with foam for the ceremony. The real demolition workers wasted no time taking down the bleachers.
Jones says the renovation will include a new club level, press box, suites, restaurant and offices plus a grass berm for general admission fans.
The renovated Cheney Stadium will be ready for opening day April 15.
The Rainiers are still playing — moving home games to Safeco Field for the Pacific Coast League playoffs.
They start the best-of-five series on the road Wednesday and Thursday at Sacramento.
