Stanwood baseball team earns No. 4 seed in district playoffs

STANWOOD — A week ago, the Stanwood baseball team had its back to the wall. Sitting at 3-9 in the Wesco North with four games to play, there wasn’t much it could do but win its remaining games and hope for some help.

Well, the Spartans did just that and earned the fourth seed in the 4A District 1 playoffs.

After sweeping last week’s series against Cascade, the Spartans capped off a sweep of Snohomish with a 13-3 win in five innings on Monday at Stanwood High School.

Facing a must-win situation, it didn’t look promising at the beginning. Snohomish scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third to take an early 3-0 lead.

But in the bottom of the third inning, Stanwood got a little help from the Panthers and a little from Mother Nature to score 10 runs and take control of the game.

With the bases loaded, David Gerdes hit a grand slam that just cleared the fence with a little help from the wind which was blowing strong all game. The hit was the catalyst for the entire inning which gave starter Tyler Greene all the support he would need.

Greene settled in after the second inning, scattering eight hits while allowing three runs over his five innings of work. He also struck out four.

“After the second (Greene) settled down,” Stanwood head coach Colby Knudson said. “He gave up one in the third but threw a lot of strikes the rest of the way.”

Gerdes finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI and Mike McCune added a 2-for-3 night with two runs scored for the Spartans who were able to win their fourth game in a row to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth.

“I think it’s just we have a lot of young players and they seem to be finding their stride right now,” said Knudson in describing the key to his team’s critical run. “It takes every team a little bit of time to find itself and we seem to be doing that right now.”
