Stanwood boys, girls overcome weather, computers

STANWOOD – With the wind whipping, the rain pouring and the cold biting, what else could go wrong at the Stanwood Invitational track meet Saturday?

How about the computers freezing.

The Stanwood Athletic Department’s new scoring computers gave organizers trouble all day. But Stanwood’s boys and girls track teams withstood the unseasonably cold weather and outlasted the computer glitches to place first and give everyone involved with the Spartan program a nice warm feeling as they left the meet. Even if they couldn’t read the results.

For the Stanwood boys, who finished ahead of second-place Lake Stevens by a mere 8 1/2 points, the reason for victory was simple.

Depth.

Only two Stanwood athletes – David Snyder and Vincent Radish – finished first, but 17 Spartans placed in the top-eight, with seven of those in the top three.

For Lake Stevens, Kevin Hutchinson, Mike Johnson, and Brad Baughman placed first in their respective events, while four other Vikings finished in the top three.

Snohomish’s Justin Brandt and Warren Eichoff took first in the 1600-meter run and high jump, respectively, to lead the Panthers to fourth place, 9 1/2points behind third-place Anacortes and six points ahead of Thomas Jefferson.

Sixth-place Bothell was led by the boy’s athlete of the day, Matt Williams. Williams finished second and third in the 300- and 110-meter hurdles, respectively, and ran the anchor legs on both of Bothell’s first-place relay teams to garner the award.

South Whidbey runners had a nice day finishing first in the boys 800, 200, and 3200 en route to a seventh-place finish.

Cascade, Everett and Shorewood rounded out the top 10 in that order.

On the girls side, Stanwood was led by the smooth running of Nikki Tepley. She finished first in the 200- and 400- meter runs to lead the Spartans, who finished ahead of Snohomish by 18 1/2 points.

The Panthers finished with a team total of 143 1/2 points due in large part to the Waterhouse sisters. Katelyn Waterhouse, who was named the girl’s athlete of the meet, finished first in the long and triple jumps while her sister Courtney placed second and third, respectively, in the same events.

Lake Stevens finished a distant third with 87 1/2 points and Everett placed fourth, 11 1/2 points back. Cascade, behind Brittany Bekins’ victories in the 100 and 300 hurdles, finished fifth, rounding out an all-Wesco top five.
