Stanwood captures North’s fourth seed

STANWOOD – The Stanwood Spartans gave themselves some extra rest Thursday with a 2-1 extra-inning victory over Monroe in a Western Conference North showdown that determined the division’s No. 4 seed to the district playoffs.

The victory gives Stanwood a week to rest and prepare for its first-round playoff game versus Kamiak. Meanwhile, Monroe plays Tuesday in a play-in game versus Mountlake Terrace.

Spartans pitcher Emily Gray finished with 10 strikeouts, Bearcats pitcher Ashley Forsberg finished with eight. Both pitchers walked one. Both gave up five hits. Stanwood stranded five runners, Monroe four.

“It was as balanced as it was going to get,” Stanwood coach Mike Chandler said.

The Spartans scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Courtney Stillman singled up the middle scoring Tasha St. Clair.
